Gaia Online: a remarkable
Posted by: | Comments
by Comic Timing
Gaia Online calls itself an “online dating community” for teenagers. Incorporating a social network, various online forums, a virtual world, and a gaming component, Gaia Online is one of the most popular websites among teenagers and young people. This article reviews this website and tells you if it is worth your kid’s time. Design The first thing that captures your attention when you visit Gaia is the bright, perky anime theme. Borrowed heavily from Japanese comics, the design has a flourish of bright colors, clean lines, and a very effervescent feel to it. Considering that this is a website aimed at teenagers, the design feels very appropriate. Features The main feature of this virtual world is its wide assortment of forums. Numbering over 151, these forums cater to virtually every subject and interest – from photography and surfing, to hip-hop and cooking.
You will be hard pressed to find a subject not covered under the Gaia Online forums. Incidentally, Gaia Online is also one of the most popular message boards on the internet with over a million posts per day. When you first sign up for Gaia Online, you will be prompted to create your own avatar in the form of a “chibi” character. “Chibi” is a Japanese term for a small man or child, and in anime, it refers to a small, gaia gold, childlike character. The chibi characters are diverse in their looks, and you will definitely find something appealing among the wide selection. The avatar system is central to Gaia Online. Users can dress up their chibi characters and get them rated in the ‘Avatar Arena”, buy houses, furniture, and houses for their avatars, and take part in role playing games in the ‘Barton Town’. ‘Gold’ is the currency used in this virtual world. This virtual currency can be gained by participating in the forum, posting answers to other members’ questions, playing games, taking part in role playing quests, or even buying it outright with actual cash. In fact, you can buy pre-paid Gaia cash cards at select Target stores in the US. Gaia Online has a vibrant virtual world called ‘Gaia Towns’. Members can buy houses for their avatars in these towns and interact with other members through games and chat rooms. You can also furnish and decorate your house and get it rated in the ‘House Arena’.
Other features of Gaia include an expanding games section with a wide selection of card and arcade games, and an ‘Art Arena’ where members can showcase their creative talent. Content Gaia Online is aimed squarely at teenagers. Some of the content on the website is not suitable for children under 13, and you may encounter some profanity use. Porn and sex is a strict no-no, and any posts about these subjects are quickly removed by moderators and staff members. Community Gaia Online’s strongest point is its friendly community. Its forums are among the most trafficked on the internet, gaia gold, and you can usually find dozens of answers to a question within a few hours of posting. Members are very helpful and there are a very few rotten apples (or ‘trolls’). The moderators and staff members are quite active and remove any objectionable posts at a moment’s notice. Website Performance Gaia Online, despite its huge traffic, manages to stay online 24/7, with very little downtime. The site loads up fairly quickly even during peak traffic hours. The games section might post a problem on older computers because of the heavy use of Flash and Shockwave, but on the whole, Gaia Online runs very smoothly, with very few outages. Final Words Gaia Online is one of the most popular online hangouts for teens, and rightly so. With its mix of games, social networking, virtual world, and community forums, Gaia Online provides something for everybody. It may not be suitable for children below 13, but older teens will find a lot to love on this website. How to Put in a Disc Brake Conversion Kit
Posted by: | Comments
by Chris Devers
In a big way, disc brake conversions are a by product of the large, open area wheel trend that has arisen in the last decade. Style-conscious builders have noticed that large wheels expose everything behind them, including ugly old drum brakes.
Step 1
Raise the vehicle into the air with either a chassis lift or a floor jack. Do not engage the parking brake.
Step 2
Remove hub caps (if equipped) and lug nuts. Remove tires to access brakes. If using a chassis lift, all tires can be removed prior to conversion.
Step 3
Remove drum brake. Tap the drum on opposite sides of the rim simultaneously to ensure the drum comes straight off without hanging up on the wheel studs. Spray the wheel studs at the base with penetrating oil and allow to sit if necessary. Keep tapping gently around the perimeter of the drum until it can be worked loose by hand.
Step 4
Remove the entire interior brake assembly. Generally, the brake assembly will unbolt from the back with either three or four bolts. Some vehicles will require new axle shafts and/or some welding or fabrication to the axle itself. Consult your kit manufacturer for details before purchasing.
Step 5
Install new brake caliper mounting bracket as per kit instructions. The new brackets will generally utilize the pre-existing brake assembly mounting holes. Use Blue Loctite to secure bolts to axle housing.
Step 6
Pack new wheel bearings with grease using the palm of your hand, making sure to get the seals as well. Some kits include bearings and some do not; check to see if yours comes with a new set before beginning.
Step 7
Place new inner wheel bearing into the back (flat part) of the disc, with the conical side facing in. Tap around the perimeter of the bearing with a rubber mallet until the bearing seats in the disc.
Step 8
Grease spindle (axle) and carefully slide rotor and bearing assembly onto spindle.
Step 9
Slide outer wheel bearing over the spindle and into the recess in the rotor.
Step 10
Tighten the washer and retaining nut onto the spindle to the manufacturer’s specifications.
Step 11
Install any spacers and sliders included with the brake caliper per manufacturer’s specifications.
Step 12
Drop the new brake caliper (with pads installed) over the disc so that it lines up with the new mounting bracket holes.
Step 13
Install bolts into caliper assembly from the front, after greasing the bolt shafts all along the smooth portion. Torque to manufacturer’s specs.
Step 14
Attach brake line to caliper using supplied adapter or new lines. Route lines along factory mounting points, and secure on either end with specialized line wrenches. Do not use a standard wrench, especially when using anodized fittings.
Step 15
Bleed the air out of the brake system after each wheel. After the system is installed, bleed the entire system starting from the first drum replaced and working toward the last.
Skill
Moderate
Things You’ll Need
Disc brake conversion kit
Set of inner and outer wheel bearings (if required)
Full set of 3/8 drive ratchets
Full set of wrenches, including line wrenches
Blue Loctite
White lithium grease
Wheel bearing grease
Pry bar
Flathead screw driver
Rubber mallet
Two ball peen hammers
Penetrating oil
Tips
Bigger isn’t always better. In some cases, larger brakes can actually provide less stopping power than a smaller, vented rotor due to their increased rotational inertia and lower operating temperatures.
Warnings
Cars that have rear drum brakes have a proportioning valve built into the system that biases fluid pressure to optimize the original design. A new adjustable proportioning valve is suggested for most applications so that the rear brakes receive the proper amount of fluid pressure.

Open Letter to President Elect Obama

Article by BOB E SHERMAN
Dear President Elect Obama:
As you have hopefully inspired many Afro Americans to aspire to greater goals; I have been inspired by George Bush and Sarah Palin. I now believe that I am smart enough to be President. I realize that there are many people in Congress smarter than I, but few with as much common sense. Please keep this in mind as you read my “vision” for America.
Taxes: Generally raising taxes in a bad economy is not a good idea. However, we do have a trillion debt. We can’t reduce the debt by lowering taxes. If you do increase taxes on the top 5% don’t give it back to me. If you increase taxes for some and give it back in the form of welfare; you haven’t accomplished anything. We may be a consumer economy. However, spending beyond our means got us into this mess.
A VAT may have been a good idea 30 years ago. I’m retired and living off my savings, much of it already taxed. If we switched to a national sales tax in place of income tax I would be taxed twice. Don’t forget the group I’m in.
Social Security: Private accounts just like a VAT may have been a good idea 30 years. I would have opted out of Social Security if allowed. But, I wasn’t and no should anyone else. Everyone should be required to participate. Benefits should be for retirement, and should be based on the amount paid in. Why should someone who paid in 40 quarters get the same as I do after paying in for 120 quarters? Benefits should be for only those citizens who paid into Social Security and definitely not for illegal aliens.
Taxing benefits is not fair unless the income threshold is so high that the recipients would not even miss their check, were it stopped. I am now receiving Social Security benefits. However, because of the unacknowledged inflation and the decline in the stock market I work part time to supplement my income. So in addition to being taxed on my benefits I must continue to pay FICA taxes, which are no benefit to me.
Free trade is a two way street. Expecting China to import our products, especially Harley Davidsons, is not protectionism.
Water: on any given day there is a flood somewhere and a drought somewhere else. We need a system to redistribute water to where it is needed. 71% of the earth’s surface is covered by oceans, and if Al Gore is correct it’s going higher. Not having clean drinking water anywhere in the world in unacceptable. One solution for the rising water levels is to drink it. We have the technology to turn sea water into fresh water. If we put our minds to it we can make it economically feasible to produce fresh water on a large scale. We could even sell it. There may be alternative to oil as a fuel, but there is no alternative to water.
Energy: Until ours cars run on something other than gasoline we need to drill for oil. Even though we can’t drill our way out of the energy problem; it’s no reason not to drill. Start in Alaska. Their governor is all for it. We also have plenty of oil shale. Let’s develop it. It might cost a little more, but eliminating our dependence on middle east oil is priceless. Developing a car that is powered by the energizer Bunny is a long way off. However, there is no reason to use any oil to generate electricity. We have natural gas, wind, coat, hydro power, and nuclear power.
Ethanol and bio diesel make no sense when there are people starving in the world. Insufficient research was done when ethanol was introduced and many marine engines were damaged. Ethanol and bio diesel cost just as much and reduce the mileage. So where is the savings? We need more fuel efficient cars. The Hummer should be discontinued immediately. Regarding the marine industry: most boats are lucky to get one mpg. If we increase it to two, the cost of boating falls, and our carbon footprint is reduced by 50%.
Bailing out the auto industry: The US auto manufacturers have no one to blame but themselves. Giving them any money is a bad idea on a long term basis. On a short term basis it may be necessary. But, not unless they come up with a new business plan. Top executives should work for per year until they get back on track or be replaced. Unions will never admit it but they make too much. Forget the union vote in 2012. Without concessions there won’t be an UAW. Don’t forget Harley Davidson. They are the only US manufacturer currently making a vehicle that gets 50mpg.
Farm Subsidies: Stop them. Just because Congress gets paid for doing nothing doesn’t mean everyone else should.
Foreign Policy: Many sovereign nations have leaders that are considered dangerous or downright crazy. However, they are still sovereign nations and we can’t tell everyone what to do, how to treat their residents or run their governments. This is why many countries hate us. What we can do is react when a person or country does something against our national interests.
Health care: Every US citizen should have access to quality health care. But it doesn’t have to be free. If you can’t afford the co-pay for the polio shot for your fourth child; maybe you shouldn’t have four kids. I proposed a plan to US Representative Debbie Wasserman Schultz for retired people, 55 to 65 years old, to join Medicare. Based on my circumstances I would have saved thousands and Medicare would have made millions on the 25 million Americans in my age group. Debbie Wasserman did not reply. She had more pressing issues, like speaking at a Hadassah Convention in California.
Good luck: You’re going to need it.

The 2010 year for Spider-man started with a revenge plot by the wife and daughter of the late Kraven the Hunter: Sasha and Ana Kravinoff. Two decades in the making after Kraven’s Last Hunt (1987) by classic Spider-man writer J.M. DeMatteis and Secret Wars artist Mike Zeck, the Kravinoff women are seeking to redeem the legacy of Kraven the Hunter.
The Kravinoff women launched a series of coordinated attacks that grinds Spidey with his own rogue gallery. Villains were amped up and given new motives against Spider-man including Electro, Sandman, Chameleon, Mysterio, Rhino, Vulture, and the Lizard. The storyline cumulates in the four-part arc ‘Grim Hunt’ between Amazing Spider-man #634 and #637 by Joe Kelly and Michael Lark.
So here we are – the issue is narrated by Madame Web who has been captured by the Kravens. Ana and Sasha team-up with Aloysha Kravinoff near the grave of Vladimir Kravinoff. Aloysha Kravinoff is the illegitimate mutant son Kraven. Together they resurrected Vladimir into a wolfman creature. Vladimir Kravinoff was the son of Kraven and also known as the Grim Hunter before he was killed by Kaine.
The issue starts off with a bleeding Kaine warning Peter that they are being hunted. Peter hears commotion outside his apartment and investigates while leaving Kaine inside. Peter finds Spider-woman battling both Ana and Aloysha Kravinoff. He joins the fight and together they fend them off. They hide out at Mattie Franklin’s apartment where Ezekiel makes a surprise entrance claiming a war between the tribes of the spiders and the hunters.
Joe Kelly is taking responsibility for writing this important story arc that has been set up by the various Spider-man writers. Great issue and keeping up with the drama and suspense. The artwork by Michael Lark fits well with the storytelling. Great start and will be following this arc to its continuation.

Apple (NASDAQ:AAPL): Digesting the Apple

Apple 4Q FY10 results (.34B/.64) were well ahead of Street consensus estimates (.86B / .06) prior to the call.Upside in the quarter was driven by robust iPhone sales and by AAPL’s accelerating momentum overseas and at Apple Stores.Supply constraints impacted both iPad and iPhone sales with supply short of demand for most of 4QFY10, according to Management.Gross Margins declined 220 bp Q/Q mainly as a result of higher contribution from iPhone 4 and iPad, despite easier component pricing and higher volume.
We note Management had guided 36% GM for the quarter which AAPL was able to best by 190 bp.1Q FY11 guidance at B/ .80 was ahead of Street expectations on Revenue reflecting our expectations of strong Holiday demand for the refreshed iPod line, the upcoming Mac refresh, and less constrained supply in the face of strong iPhone4 and iPad demand.Steve Jobs made a surprise appearance on the call to address competitive issues in the tablet and smartphone markets, while articulating AAPL’s competitive advantages.
We are encouraged by Management commentary around increasing adoption of both the iPhone and the iPad in the Enterprise. Near term, we expect the release of iOS 4.2 to increase the adoption rate of the iPad in the enterprise, helped by the “air-cover” being provided by the launch of several competitive Tablet offerings, some of them targeted clearly at the Enterprise. We are also encouraged by ramping revenue and profitability at AAPL stores and their potential especially in overseas markets to meet untapped broad-based demand for AAPL products.
Many are raising estimates given the faster-than-expected international ramp, the fast-growing AAPL retail footprint especially overseas, increasing Enterprise adoption and future easing of iPad and iPhone4 supply.Ex-cash, AAPL shares trade at about 13x our new FY11 EPS estimate, which given the factors discussed above and AAPL’s growth, are inexpensive,
